Abstract
-Abstract-
Calcification of dentin remains a controversial subject in spite of previous reports
describing the positive findings on matrix versicles in dentin calcification. To examine
whether matrix vesicles are involved in dentin in dentin calcification, the serial section
of developing molars of postnatal 15 days rats was observed under transmission electron
microscope prepared with hydrous or anhydrous method. Matrix vesicles were frequently
found at the calcifying front of dentin (approximatly 7 matrix vesicles per 1 §). The
first mineral deposits were recognized in the interior of matrix vescles. Mineral particles
in the matrix vesicle pierced the membrane of matrix vesicle and extruded into
extracellular space. Also mineral particles were observed on the collagen fibers apart
form the cells. These findings suggest that the initial mineralization of dentin may be
mediated by matrix vesicles.
